Little more than a year ago, VIB’s 10th research center, VIB.AI: Center for AI & Computational Biology was launched. Heading this new endeavor is Prof. Stein Aerts, Scientific Director of the new center focusing on applications of artificial intelligence and computational biology. We sat down with Stein to reflect on the past year and to discuss what the future holds for this exciting new field of research.

Cracking the code of undiagnosed diseases

350 million people worldwide live with undiagnosed diseases. Genome sequencing can provide answers for 40% of children and adults with undiagnosed diseases, but around 60% still don't receive a diagnosis. The Wilhelm Foundation is dedicated to finding new ways and collaborations to address diseases that currently have no solutions. That’s led them to organizing a hackathon, an event where participants from diverse disciplines use computational tools and techniques to solve biological problems within a set timeframe. At this Undiagnosed Hackathon event, 126 clinicians, bioinformaticians, molecular biologists, scientists, developers, AI specialists, and individuals from 28 countries formed multidisciplinary teams to tackle the most challenging diseases.

In anticipation of the upcoming Applied Bioinformatics in Life Sciences conference, we had the pleasure of sitting down with two experts. The first is Alex Botzki, head of the Technology Training unit at VIB and driving force behind the conference. The second is Amelie Stein, an invited speaker who leads a lab at the University of Copenhagen. Both share insights into their work, hot topics in the field, collaboration, and their vision for the future of bioinformatics.

Lessons from space communication and AI tackle the reproducibility crisis  

One of the core principles of the scientific method is the validation of results. To achieve this, scientists would ideally run their tests or experiments again to see whether the results the first time weren't a coincidence. Even better would be if other scientists could independently validate the results. That way, we can rule out that there are specific (lab) conditions that skew the results. The independent replication of scientific results is the strongest clue we have that a finding reveals something true about reality.
